In the 1980s, martial arts fans were bombarded with a series of kickboxing films, which were aimed at a male audience.
Some of the films depicted violent fights between men, but the movies often featured women.
In 1997, the UFC banned women fighters from its roster.
Since then, women have taken up martial arts in a number of different ways.

HOW TO GET THE BEST OUT OF THE SITUATION Female fighters tend to be the most physically agile, and they’re more comfortable performing high-risk, high-reward techniques that require more than a few minutes of sparring to master.
“The idea of a high-powered strike is a very specific and narrow-minded concept,” says Michael O’Brien, the founder of The Great American Kickboxing Tournament, which has been running in Las Vegas since the early 1990s.
“It’s not what I think of as being the art of fighting.”
This can be seen when fighters train in high-impact kickboxing matches, such as kickboxing contests with over a dozen fighters.
“When you start doing high-profile fights, the guys get used to getting hit,” O’Briens says.
In fact, many women use kickboxing to fight in high school and college tournaments, which he believes is the most effective way to get into the ring and develop their skills.
